School competition on cybersecurity strengthens career choices and the European spirit

20/06/2024

The first joint school competition initiative between Luxembourg and North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) focused on the topic of cybersecurity.

Students from Düsseldorf traveled to Luxembourg for the finals. The event was organised by the Luxembourg Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, WorldSkills Luxembourg and the NRW Ministry of Labor.

Even before the main event of 'EuroSkills 2027', numerous events are being held in Germany and Luxembourg where students, training staff, young professionals, and representatives from politics and business come together to learn about and actively shape the world of vocational education across borders. The aim is also to strengthen the European spirit and to promote democracy.

The first joint digital school competition initiative between Luxembourg and NRW started in the autumn of 2023 on the topic of cybersecurity. Preliminary rounds were held online, and the finals took place in early summer 2024 in Luxembourg.

Students from the Freie Christliche Gesamtschule, the Goethe Gymnasium, and the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf, as well as elementary school students from Sanem and Koerich and classes from Lycée Guillaume Kroll in Esch-sur-Alzette, showcased their skill by qualifying in a total of twenty duels on the topic of cybersecurity.

The 10 winning classes, in duels always between one class from Luxembourg and one class from Düsseldorf, secured their trip to Luxembourg for the finals. In the qualification round, the students “met” online via Teams and started their battle, connected via webcam, simultaneously. The final took place in the Lycée Guillaume Kroll where the students simultaneously solved so-called “challenges” on cybersecurity and participated in a pedagogical IT workshop.

The winners of the cybersecurity competition in the different grade levels are:

  • Cycle 4.2 from Sanem in Luxembourg
  • Class 2GIN/2CI from Lycée Guillaume Kroll in Esch-sur-Alzette
  • Grade 9 from Max-Planck-Gymnasium
